Apart from being completely baffled as to why we were invited, we were even more shocked that not a single printer or publisher was present amongst 200 business leaders. How can this industry hold its own against stiff competition from alternative media and against charges of environmental hostility, without engaging with government and NGOs?

Sustainable business models in the media space need international standards

  Anyone committed to modern and forward-looking production methods ignores environmental concerns in doing business at their peril. At a minimum, the idea seems to occupy the minds of entrepreneurs and their executives with increasing urgency. A crucial part of the trend toward sustainable production methods is played by the »Carbon Footprint«, which looms large as mitigating factor for carbon dioxide emissions. As of this writing, and in the absence of international standards, each country still seems inclined to follow an improvisational approach of its own. Yet an ISO technical committee for ecological media production in printing is already busy promulgating guidelines with the goal of introducing their first results at drupa 2012.

Media Mundo @ drupa 2012
Under the title of “Media Mundo @ drupa”, a special exhibit on sustainability is planned, with whose implementation the industry initiative Media Mundo has been entrusted as a cooperation partner. On about 200 m² of exhibition space, visitor information, live discussions and exciting presentations from experts and industry players will be offered over the two weeks of the trade fair. Special attention will be given to dialogue and participation. For example, the lectures will be streamed live on the Internet; questions can be posed in real-time to the speakers using Chat and Twitter functions - completely encompassing the motto of “one world – one drupa”.
