Smyth’s initial production of sewing machines for books commenced in 1871 when David McConnel Smyth obtained his first patent. In 1882 the Smyth Manufacturing Company in Hartford, USA, began production of the sewing machine, resulting in significant progress in bookbinding technology.
In the following years, the Smyth sewing machines gained an important role in the world market due to the machine’s production, quality and performance.
In 1958 Smyth Europea was established, because Smyth Manufacturing Company wanted an operational and manufacturing base in the area of the European Common Market.
Smyth Europea gained much experience from Smyth, USA, with regard to technical know-how and with the contribution of Italian knowledge produced very positive results which were immediately appreciated by the National market and by European markets.
In the early 1970s, the Smyth Manufacturing Company decided to cease their manufacturing activity, transferring drawings and know-how to Smyth Europea and passing ownership to the Italians.
Having obtained company indipendence, Smyth Europea continued their expansion vigorously, replacing the American parent company in the world market, in the beginning in the field of thread sewing machines and later with casing-in lines for hard cover book production.
In the early 1996, to take advantage of the new market opportunities opening up, the old company was completely re-structured and Nuova Smyth has been established combining the traditions of Smyth Europea, with a new experienced Management structure resulting in a reliable and active company in this market.
