Compliant printed food contact materials - EuPIA's contribution
EuPIA members have a suite of policies, processes and guidance documents in place for designing and manufacturing compliant inks and coatings (FCM inks). These have been developed by EuPIA members with the aim of supporting printers and converters to produce printed food contact materials (FCM) compliant with legal requirements as well as with those of brand owners.

The overarching principles of the EuPIA FCM ink policies are combined in the umbrella document "EuPIA Guideline".

Every printing ink and varnish/coating supplied by EuPIA members complies with the EuPIA "Exclusion Policy" which excludes the use of raw materials with specific hazard properties from use in all their products.

Printing inks and varnishes/coatings for food contact materials (FCM inks) are designed and manufactured according to the provisions of the EuPIA "Good Manufacturing Practices" ("EuPIA GMP") which is an extension of the standards for companys management systems.

Details on migration testing with a focus on printed FCM is given in the "EuPIA Guidance on Migration Test Methods".

Non-intentionally added substances which may be present in inks are risk assessed by EuPIA members using the EuPIA "Guidance for NIAS Risk Assessment".

About us

Company portrait

The German Paint and Printing Ink Association (VdL) is the voluntary self-organisation of manufacturers of paints, varnishes and printing inks in Germany.

The VdL represents the economic and socio-political interests of the German paint industry - as well as German subsidiaries of foreign manufacturers - towards other economic sectors, politics, authorities, science and the media.

The VdL represents 85% of the German paints, coatings and printing inks. More than 200 member companies are organised in the association. The structure of the member companies is very heterogeneous: In addition to a few large, multinational companies, most of which are linked to corporate groups, there are a large number of medium-sized manufacturers, many of which are family-owned.
