The Digital Textile Microfactory developed by DITF is a concept for the virtual development und digitally networked production of personalised textiles and clothes. It consists of virtual design & simulation, colour management, printing, cutting and confection. Since almost 10 years it is a demonstrator and showcase of up-to-date technology. The panel discussion will focus on future developments, challenges and the role of the concept as a gamechanger towards nearshoring production.

Each Micro Factory station is efficient. Performance relies on customer’s integration. Ergosoft, 25+ year presence in digital print market, offer CMS, Textile RIP and automation to reduce cost by raising high quality and volume output. Several brand name printer manufacturers bundle their printers with Ergosoft software. Our consulting and support in digital printing helps the textile industry to improve quality and productivity. This allows to bring some of the business back to the local area.

Mitwill Textiles Europe is operating a digital microfactory since 2020, with reactive, pigment and sublimation printing capabilities and reactive finishing. Newest technology allows placed or double-face prints. The Microfactory allows Mitwill customers production of print samples for rapid prototyping, and quick printing of small lots of premium prints. The Microfactory is underpinned by a proprietary process software and a collaborative design platform of international Mitwill community designers.

A number of newly developed inks will be presented as well as their possibilities and limitations in digital coloration and functionalisation. Dr. Martin Lades - Director Product & Development at Assyst GmbH will present that 3D Garment Simulation and visualization is a more and more applied method for significantly shorten product development lead time and cost in the Fashion industry. This technology opens new applications in the area of product presentation (B2B and B2C) and digital collection development as well as individualized product offerings based on textile printing and microfactories. It furthermore shows how to link both digitization and customer integration within the sales process, interactively and across all departments.

TEXTILE 4.0

Industry 4.0 is making its way into the textile industry and the DITF is at the forefront with innovative solutions to pave the way for the textile future.
In the future, those who use digital engineering (modelling, virtualisation) consistently in development and production, who are familiar with big and smart data and who are virtuosos in dealing with the Internet of Textile Things will be competitive.

These future technologies are already being implemented at the DITF today and are being systematically further developed. The institutes positioned themselves early on as thought leaders and pioneers of Industry 4.0 in the textile industry and have begun developing the corresponding technologies.

The digital world of Textile 4.0 permeates the entire process chain and enables the efficient production of small batches up to batch size 1. The value creation of a textile product therefore requires knowledge management and corresponding business models. One important interface is human-machine interaction, which is being further developed on a broad basis at the DITF.

SMART TEXTILES

Smart textiles from the DITF research and development forge overcome technological boundaries, can communicate and interact. They take on new tasks that relieve people and make the world a smarter place.
DITF researchers are working on hybrid products with added functionality. They offer the advantages of textile structures and fulfil additional tasks. For example, smart textiles from the DITF have integrated sensors and/or actuators with which they record environmental data or react to their surroundings. Depending on the functional plus, we differentiate:

  • Pneumatic textiles
  • Light and sound textiles
  • Climate-regulating textiles
  • Conductive textiles
  • E-textiles
The functional plus makes the textiles fit for innovative special solutions, for example in the smart home, in the smart city, for living walls and for medical textiles. The research and testing laboratories of the DITF are constantly expanding the field of applications and are open to new questions from their partners. Smart textiles are developed both in direct contract research for industry and in publicly funded research projects. In addition, the DITF is also involved in basic research in order to be able to develop smart textiles for the world of tomorrow.

TEXTILE FINISHING AND COATING

DITF scientists are working on new materials for the textile markets of tomorrow.
Products for special tasks in the clothing industry and for technical applications are created from basic textiles by coating, laminating and finishing as well as by textile printing and chemical or physical modification.

The DITF develop textile finishes and coatings which they bring to production readiness in cooperation with industrial partners. The special service for our industrial partners: A large part of the research facilities can be rented together with specialist personnel for company-specific developments and tests.

Environmentally friendly processes
Textile finishing and coating are the most energy-intensive processes in textile manufacturing. DITF scientists analyze and exploit the potential for energy savings at all process levels and trim conventional methods for energy efficiency.

From energy saving to energy generation: Intensive research is being carried out at the DITF on the use of technical textiles for energy generation. Initial successes have been achieved, for example, in the storage of thermal energy and in the recovery of thermal energy through novel heat exchangers.
